Symposium Wrap-up Part 4

Contents

This is part 4 in our series of 2018 Symposium Wrap-up posts for our symposium and workshop, Genome Editing – Putting Together the Pieces.

In this post, we discuss some of the social issues associated with gene editing and biotechnology in general.

Influences on Public Opinion

There is evidence that Russia is attempting to manipulate public opinion on “GMOs”, or genetically modified organisms.

The regulatory status as well as industry and consumer acceptance of gene edited crops ultimately depend on whether they are considered GMOs.

In addition to consumer acceptance, industry acceptance is needed for products to be successful.

Looking Forward

Despite the challenges, there is hope among the speakers that gene editing will change how consumers see genetic engineering technologies.

One speaker’s strategy involves outreach to the community and to farmers early in the research process.

There are steps every researcher can take to make science more accessible to the public.
